Antimicrobial Drug–Selection Markers for Burkholderia pseudomallei and B. mallei
Genetic research into the select agents Burkholderia pseudomallei and B. mallei is currently hampered by a paucity of approved antimicrobial drug-selection markers. The strict regulations imposed on researchers in the United States but not in other parts of the world lead to discrepancies in practice, hinder distribution of genetically modified strains, and impede progress in the field. Deliber...
متن کاملDevelopment of Burkholderia mallei and pseudomallei vaccines
Burkholderia mallei and Burkholderia pseudomallei are Gram-negative bacteria that cause glanders and melioidosis, respectively. Inhalational infection with either organism can result in severe and rapidly fatal pneumonia. Inoculation by the oral and cutaneous routes can also produce infection. Chronic infection may develop after recovery from acute infection with both agents, and control of inf...
متن کاملBurkholderia pseudomallei and Burkholderia mallei: Melioidosis and Glanders
The genus Burkholderia is currently composed of many species, but only three are notable pathogens for humans or animals: the former cepacia complex (described in Chapter 220) pseudomallei (the agent of melioidosis), and mallei (the agent of equine glanders). All three are aerobic, nonsporulating, straight or slightly curved gram-negative bacilli that were formerly placed in the genus Pseudomonas.
متن کاملPCR-based Methodologies Used to Detect and Differentiate the Burkholderia pseudomallei complex: B. pseudomallei, B. mallei, and B. thailandensis.
Methods for the rapid detection and differentiation of the Burkholderia pseudomallei complex comprising B. pseudomallei, B. mallei, and B. thailandensis, have been the topic of recent research due to the high degree of phenotypic and genotypic similarities of these species. B. pseudomallei and B. mallei are recognized by the CDC as tier 1 select agents. The high mortality rates of glanders and ...
متن کاملGenomic diversity of Burkholderia pseudomallei clinical isolates: subtractive hybridization reveals a Burkholderia mallei-specific prophage in B. pseudomallei 1026b.
Burkholderia pseudomallei is the etiologic agent of the disease melioidosis and is a category B biological threat agent. The genomic sequence of B. pseudomallei K96243 was recently determined, but little is known about the overall genetic diversity of this species. Suppression subtractive hybridization was employed to assess the genetic variability between two distinct clinical isolates of B. p...
